Gage's Femur Update - posted: Jan 5, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Gage got his cast off a week ago today. He didn't want to go to the Dr's. He cried the whole time we were getting ready. When we got there he seemed to be OK. Dave took him back to get his X-rays (I hadn't decided if I wanted to see them, I was worried it would look really bad and I would cry because my perfect little child was no longer perfect). The nurse came in and told us the Dr said it looked good so we were going to take off the cast. He only had it on for just over 5 weeks so that's pretty quick healing! The nurse said his cast is one of the cleanest ones she had seen. I thought it was pretty gross it was even starting to smell but I guess we did pretty good. When Gage saw the machine that sawed it off I thought he would start freaking out or cry but he didn't. He did awesome! :0) I don't know why I thought he would handle it any other way, he is such a big boy! He said it tickled. As soon as she got it off that is when he started crying a little. The nurse warned us he would because when their hips are in that position for so long it hurts to move them. It didn't take too long for him to calm down. The Dr came in and showed us the X-ray, It actually didn't look as bad as I imagined. He has 2 knots on the bone on each side of the break. But it seemed to be pretty straight. It didn't really look healed to me the new bone was see through but what do I know? So we got some normal clothes on him and went home to take his first bath in over a month, which he cried about. But it did wonders on all his dry skin and scaly feet. (ewww) He wouldn't walk or hardly even move his leg for the first couple of days. Every time we had to move the leg he told us "do it nicely, nicely" He seems to be getting better every day. The muscles and ligaments are really tight so he can't put his leg straight, I tell him he walks like a monkey :0) He doesn't have to hold on to things to balance anymore and he's already jumping off things he shouldn't. He's still a little nervous about it so he asks to be carried sometimes but he wants to do things by himself most of the time. He has a follow up appointment after 6 weeks to take more X-rays and to compare the length of the legs. I will update you again...
